In Memory of

Colin Kang (1973-2007)

I was saddened by the news of Colin Kang’s sudden death. I accidentally came across it while reading the newspapers (“accidentally” because I never flip through the obituaries section, ever!).

I met him only once, a few months ago, at the law week held at Vivo City. I was given the opportunity to sit in, observe and participate (a little) in the pro bono legal advice sessions that was being offered to shoppers there (pic above, with Colin in the centre and me on his right). We sat and chatted for a little while after. Despite having such a short encounter with him, it was evident that he was a man of principle, sincerity and passion for the less fortunate.

Amidst recent reports of the negative side of the legal profession (cheating, fraud, forgeries, etc), here was a wonderful example of a lawyer playing a positive role in our society; a worthy inspiration to many lawyers in Singapore.

My regret is that I did not have the opportunity to get to know him better – this is certainly my loss.
